Buffalo, N.Y. based singer/songriter Ani Difranco released her new Live DVD recently. It’s called Ani Difranco – Live At Babeville. Although she might not be known that well outside of the States, especially in Europe, she can look back at a musical career that has lasted for nearly two decades now. She has always been a (left-wing) political activist and her songs cover both political and personal themes. Always acting beyond the mainstream she even built up her own music label called Righteous Babe Recods which is very successful, to say the least.
In her hometown, Buffalo, N.Y. she saved an old church building from demolition. She actively participated in all esthetical decisions and developed the concept of a local cultural center called Babeville. As she also got her little child in that period this must have been a whole lot of work. Babeville is also the headquarters of Righteous Babe Records. The opening concert is now available as a Live DVD which was recorded from six different camera perspectives.
The opening concerts were on Sept 11 and 12 in 2007. The images as well as the sound on the DVD are of superb quality. I have been at several of her concerts and it has been a special event every single time. Although a live DVD can never really replace the real show this one does come close. She plays many of her old songs as well as some new ones.
